Block-by-Block Tree-Planting Program

Growing cooler, greener, more connected streets—together

Heights Tree People is launching a new Block-by-Block Tree Planting Program to help neighborhoods across Cleveland Heights and University Heights bring more trees—and all their benefits—to the streets that need them most.

Some residential blocks have plenty of front-yard space but very few trees. These streets represent an opportunity: when trees are planted together, block by block, they cool our neighborhoods, improve air quality, raise property values, and strengthen community connections.

Why Block-by-Block Matters

Trees aren’t just decorative. Research consistently shows that tree-lined streets are:

  • Cooler and more climate-resilient

  • Healthier, with reduced stress and better air quality

  • More socially connected and desirable places to live

When trees become part of daily life, neighborhoods thrive.

NOMINATE YOUR BLOCK!

How the Program Works

The idea is simple—and powerful.

Neighbors on a block come together, sign up, and—if selected—receive free trees planted in their front yards, all at once.

Heights Tree People provides:

  • Trees at no cost

  • Help choosing the right tree for each yard

  • Professional coordination and planting by trained volunteers and tree stewards

Participants commit to:

  • Watering their tree once a week during the summer

  • Long-term care and stewardship

  • Homeowner permission (renters are welcome with landlord approval)

Could Your Block Be Next?

If your street could use more shade, beauty, and connection, this program is for you. Let’s grow our neighborhoods—one block at a time.

How Blocks Are Selected

Each year, Heights Tree People will select:

  • One block in Cleveland Heights

  • One block in University Heights

Blocks are evaluated using a clear scoring rubric to ensure trees are planted where they will thrive and provide the greatest community benefit.

Selection criteria include:

  • Existing canopy need and environmental impact

  • Level of neighbor participation and block cohesion

  • Commitment to long-term care

  • Practical feasibility of planting multiple trees efficiently

  • Visibility and potential to inspire nearby streets

Blocks with high need, strong participation, and a shared commitment rise to the top.
